mtDNA Results Interpretation

   Sue            Robert              Paula

  • mtDNA is found in two "Hyper-Variable Regions" called
HVR1 and HVR2. You may be tested for one or both.

  • mtDNA reports usually show mutation locations and their respective values (e.g. 519 & C) for the regions tested

  • Individuals with identical mutations may  share a recent maternal ancestor — e.g. Sue and Robert, but not Paula

  • A common ancestor could have lived anytime in the last thousand years — check your paper trail for recent connections
